The World Steel Association released a public policy document on “Climate Change and Steel Production” on the 17th. The document outlines the challenges and opportunities faced by the steel industry in reducing carbon dioxide emissions in order to achieve the goals of the Paris Agreement.
The steel industry is still a carbon emission and energy consumption intensive industry. Nevertheless, the steel industry is committed to continuously reducing the carbon footprint of its production operations and product use. However, there is no single solution that can greatly reduce the carbon emissions of the steel industry. We believe that all countries are fully capable of evaluating and implementing policies and technical strategies that meet their specific conditions. However, industry response measures widely applicable to steel producers around the world mainly include:
Reduce the influence of the steel industry itself
Improve efficiency and circular economy
Develop advanced steel products to promote social transformation
Edwin Basson, Director General of the World Steel Association, said: “There is no doubt that governments and stakeholders need to work hand in hand with the steel industry to overcome technical and economic challenges and effectively transform the steel industry into low-carbon steelmaking. Create the necessary market conditions.”
