Based on the news of November 30, 2022, the President of Indonesia said on Wednesday that Indonesia would appeal against a commercial dispute judgment. He said that the European Union believed that the judgment was correct, and that the European Union would continue to ban the export of nickel mines from Indonesia in 2020.

In his speech at an investment event, President Joko Widodo promised that the decision of the World Trade Organization (WTO) would not prevent the processing of more raw materials in the country, and instructed the government to appeal.

“Although we lost the nickel issue in the WTO – I… It’s no big deal. I have told the minister to appeal,” the well-known President Chokoy said.

The EU lodged a complaint with the WTO, pointing out that these restrictions unfairly restricted its stainless steel producers’ access to nickel and other raw materials.

The WTO has not yet published its decision. In April 2021, the Commission set up an ad hoc group to monitor the dispute between the EU and Indonesia. Its final report will be published in the last quarter of 2022. The report is available on the agency’s website in Geneva.

Jokowi called on Indonesia to stop exporting raw materials and said that the export of bauxite and other unprocessed minerals would also stop.

He said: “Look for investors, let the investment come here, let it have added value like nickel.”.

Before the ban on mineral exports, Indonesia was the largest nickel exporter in the world, aiming to attract foreign investors to develop nickel smelters and downstream industries locally, while China was an important source of investment.

“We want to be a developed country. We want to create jobs. If we shrink from being prosecuted, we will not be a developed country.
