Indonesia's first low-carbon nickel smelter was officially launched
On February 10, PT Vale Indonesia Tbk and Bahodopi Nickel Smelting Indonesia (BNSI) held the official commencement ceremony of the low-carbon nickel ore project and the nickel smelter integration project. The commencement ceremony was presided over by Airlangga Hartarto, Minister of Economic Coordination.
The nickel mine project is located in Bungku Timur Town and Bahodopi Town, Morowali County, central Jiangsu Province, and the smelter is located in Sambalagi Town, Bungku Pesisir Town.
Elronka said in an official statement issued in Jakarta on the 10th, “I hope other projects can follow up. As God wishes, the construction project can be completed in 2.5 years. I have seen the ability and spirit of the project owner. The project seems to be in order. I believe it is part of good management.”
The total investment of the project is 37.5 trillion dong and the annual production capacity is 73000 tons.
The nickel smelter is one of the national strategic projects in Indonesia, adopting the rotary kiln-electric furnace process (RKEF). The power supply of the smelter comes from the natural gas power plant.
This will reduce the carbon emissions of the whole project operation, with the goal of reducing 33% by 2030.
“This is the first green smelter I have seen. The power supply comes from liquefied natural gas. Of course, we request the support of the Energy Committee of the Congress, which is green energy, green products and green mining.” Elronka explained.
The project is expected to drive the economic growth of the Central Soviet Province and the entire Sulawesi Island.
The existing nickel smelter project employs about 12000 to 15000 workers during the construction period, and about 3000 employees when it is put into production.
“The community benefits from the multiplier effect of this project and can participate in the industrial development ecosystem of the Moro Valley,” he said.
He believed that with the rapid development of industry, people’s welfare would be improved.
“I appeal to enterprises to send as many young people as possible to receive education and training here so that they can work in this company in the future,” Elronka said.
At the same time as the construction of the low-carbon nickel ore project and the nickel smelting integration project was officially started, the construction of the Bahomotefe port was also officially started. The port will support interregional connectivity and develop a high-value-added downstream mineral logistics chain.
